The School
In July, 2008 the school in the Village of Shimoga opened in a rented facility with a kindergarten class of 72 Dalit students.
They are hearing for the first time that they have value and dignity - a powerfully different message than what they have been told - that they are worthless and lower than animals.
There are no desks at the rented facility but the children seem to be thriving studying on the floor as shown in the image above.
When funds are raised, a permanent facility will be built. The building will provide classrooms for generally Kindergarten through Grade 5.
As the school grows and upper grades are required, a second level will be added. The school will provide education through the Grade 10 level, which is the India standard for middle school education, after which students can then move on to a Junior College or technical training.
The significance of this Dalit school is that it will be the only English medium school in this area. When the school building is completed, there will be the potential for educating over 500 students. Not only will it be a source of education for the Dalit children but will provide a training facility for the adults as well.
The school will be a lighthouse of hope in the rural village of Shimoga and surrounding area.
